Extensions are not one-size-fits-all, and the moment to work that out is the consultation — not when the client is already in the chair. A structured consultation is the single best defense against the wrong method, the wrong weight, and the unpaid redo.
Assess the natural hair first
Before you talk options, evaluate what you're working with: density, texture, elasticity, and scalp health. Fine hair, thick hair, and fragile hair each rule certain methods in and others out. This physical assessment drives everything downstream — method, weight, and expectations.
Understand her lifestyle
How she lives determines how much maintenance she can realistically commit to. A client who works out daily, swims, or has no time for daily styling needs a different recommendation than someone who wants maximum drama and will maintain it. Ask directly.
Decide method and weight together
Once you know the hair and the lifestyle, choose the format and the gram weight as one decision. Length and density set the weight; the method sets how that weight is distributed. Getting both right at consultation means your order is correct before you place it.
Nail the color match
Color is where a technically perfect install still fails visually. Assess in good light, plan for any custom coloring, and set expectations if a blend or root shadow will be needed. This is also the moment to lean on your supplier's color-match support.
Set expectations out loud
Tell her plainly: how long the hair should last, how often she'll need a move-up, what aftercare is required, and what could go wrong if she skips it. Clients who understand the commitment upfront are the ones who come back happy — and who don't ask for a redo.
